Who has scored the fastest 10000 runs in ODI?

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli holds the record for the fastest 10000 runs in ODI.

There have been several records set and broken over the years in the fifty-over format. One such milestone is the mark of 10,000 ODI runs which only some of the best cricketers have gotten to. To date, only 14 players have scored more than 10000 runs in ODI cricket, which explains how elusive the list is.

Five of those players are from India, and three of them top the list of the fastest 10000 runs in ODI cricket. Four cricketers from Sri Lanka have also breached that landmark, but none of them are in the top five list.

Without further ado, let’s discuss the batsmen who were the fastest to 10000 ODI runs.

Virat Kohli | 205 innings

The greatest ODI batsman of his generation and arguably of all time, former Indian captain Virat Kohli holds the record for being the fastest to reach the milestone of 10,000 ODI runs. Kohli achieved this humongous feat on October 24, 2018, when he surpassed his idol Sachin Tendulkar to reach the milestone. He did it in his 205th innings against West Indies in Vishakhapatnam. During the knock, he also became the fastest batter to score 1000 runs in a calendar year, taking only 11 innings.

Since making his debut in August 2008, Kohli took only 10 years and 67 days – the shortest amount of time – to reach that coveted milestone in his ODI career. He has scored 12,311 runs in 260 ODI matches and has a stunning average of 58.07. The former Indian captain has also smashed 43 centuries in this format.

Rohit Sharma | 241 innings

One of the all-time great Indian white ball cricketers and the current captain of the team, it isn’t surprising to see Rohit Sharma’s name on this list. The 36-year-old is also the most recent addition to this list after reaching the career landmark of 10,000 runs this month in the ODI against Sri Lanka at the Asia Cup.

Rohit was deemed a prodigy very early on in his career and was fast-tracked into the Indian setup. However, several poor spells saw him drifting in and out of the side before he found his footing as an opener in this format. He is the only player with three double centuries in ODIs.

Sachin Tendulkar | 259 innings

Arguably the greatest batsman of all time, Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar was the fastest batsman to reach 10,000 ODI runs for nearly 15 years. A true magician of the game, the iconic figure reached the 10000 run mark in 259 innings, crossing it against Australia in 2001.

It took him 11 years and 103 days since making his debut to script the record. With 18, 426 runs which included 49 centuries and 96 half-centuries – the most in this format – Sachin Tendulkar hung up his boots from 50-over cricket in 2012.

Sourav Ganguly | 263 innings

It is a fact to be proud of as three magnificent individuals from India spearhead the list. Sourav Ganguly, one of the greatest Indian captains, formed a wonderful partnership with Sachin Tendulkar at the top of the order in ODI cricket. He stands third on this list and reached the 10,000-run mark in 263 innings.

‘Dada’, as he is affectionately known, reached the landmark against Sri Lanka in Dambulla in August 2005. He ended his ODI career with 311 ODI matches, during which he scored 11,363 runs at an average of 41.02

Ricky Ponting | 266 innings

Ricky Ponting is one of the greatest batsmen and captains that the sport of cricket has ever seen. He has lifted the prestigious World Cup three times and was a genius batsman across all formats. A top-order batter who always got the best out of his opposition, Ponting took 266 innings to score 10000 runs in One Day Internationals. He got to the mark against South Africa in March 2007.

It took the legendary Australian captain 12 years and 37 days to get to that magical milestone. His 375-match ODI career was decorated with 13,704 runs, including 30 centuries and 82 half-centuries.
