Pat Cummins: A Force of Nature

Pat-Cummins-Finger
Pat Cummins, one of the leading fast bowlers in world cricket, could well go on to become one of the greatest bowlers from Australia. The current captain of the Australian Test team is a highly rated player in all forms of the game and has a great record to boast of. He’s in the best shape of his career in regards to fitness and form. In the last few years, Cummins has become a force of nature with impeccable accuracy, speed and skill set. But the journey wasn’t all swift for the New South Wales quick. Pat Cummins burst onto the international cricket scene in 2011 as an 18yr old tearaway quick, loaded with immense potential to carry forward the legacy of great Aussie bowlers. Playing with a heel injury in his debut Test in South Africa, Cummins took a six-wicket haul in the second innings. He was hailed as cricket’s next big thing by the Herald Sun. Countless articles made the rounds, singing praises for the obvious talent this 18yr old kid possessed. However, the string of injuries, especially stress fracture, sidelined him from the longer format for over five years. At one point, he even prioritised white-ball cricket and was part of Australia’s World Cup winning squad in 2015. The Aussie pacer returned to the Test side in 2017 after a five-year gap and played in the last two Test matches in the Border-Gavaskar trophy in India. Cummins retained his spot in the 2017-18 Ashes and was the best bowler on show with 23 wickets in their 4-0 series triumph. Cummins truly solidified himself as the most bankable bowler for Australia on their tour of South Africa in 2017-18. He played all four matches in the series and claimed 22 wickets. He also established himself as a useful lower order batter in these two series with some crucial contributions. In February 2019, he became the second bowler since 2014 and the fourth overall to win the Allan Border medal for his performance over the previous 12 months. 2019 was an even better year for Pat Cummins, where he picked 59 wickets at an average of 20.14. He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2019 Ashes, snaring 29 wickets in five matches at 19.62 apiece. Cummins was appointed as the captain of the Test side in late 2021, following the resignation from Tim Paine. He led the side to a pretty convincing 4-0 victory in the Ashes, where he ended up as the leading wicket-taker yet again with 21 wickets from four matches. As for his overall record, Cummins has 186 wickets in 39 Tests at an average of 21.49. The right arm pacer has snared six five-wicket hauls and one 10-wk haul in the longer format. He has pretty good numbers in the ODI format as well, having claimed 111 wickets in 69 matches at an average of 28.78 and economy of 5.25, including one five-wicket haul. Cummins has 44 wickets in international T20s at an economy of 7.05 and was part of Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup winning campaign. Pat Cummins has been one of the highly sought-after players in the Indian Premier League in recent years. In the 2020 IPL auction, Cummins became one of the most expensive players in the history when Kolkata Knight Riders bought him for INR 15.5 Cr. He remained with KKR in the IPL 2021 and will represent them again in the upcoming season after getting picked for INR 7.25 Cr. The Aussie quick has played 37 matches in the IPL and has picked 38 wickets at an economy of 8.24. He offers a lot of value with the bat as well.
